On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a 3,800-word open letter calling for a slowdown in AI development, with new guardrails and oversight. Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis spoke out in agreement — while also asking for weaker antitrust rules so their companies can coordinate on slowing down.
But as former FTC Chair Lina Khan argues, the regulation already exists. Current law prohibits companies from developing "dangerous, unvetted, or defective products" and allows the government to prosecute those who do. OpenAI researchers have already produced models that hacked into other companies multiple times, which by Khan's argument could be a crime under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
Drop Site's Julian Andreone asked members of Congress: should Altman and OpenAI be put on trial for computer fraud?
