A 78-year-old widow facing deportation over Brexit from Sweden says she feels she is still facing a “death sentence” after her lawyers applied for a stay of execution on her removal order.

Joyce Thomas was due to fly from Stockholm to the UK on Tuesday night at the end of a four-week deadline to get out of the country on the grounds that she had made a late application to remain in the country after Brexit.

Sitting in her apartment near Karlstad in central Sweden, the former nurse, who has been in Sweden for 22 years, said the forced removal and threatened deportation if she doesn’t leave has been mentally crushing and completely disproportionate to the “mistake” she may have made.
