Professor Jeffrey Sachs joined Drop Site’s Ryan Grim and Murtaza Hussain after traveling 15,000 kilometers from Rome to Hong Kong in a Chinese electric vehicle this summer to tell us what he learned.

He said he encountered modern, middle-class societies across Asia, with roadside shopping malls “indistinguishable from what you would see in Cincinnati or Pittsburgh or upstate New York,” and infrastructure often newer than America’s.

In our full interview, now live on YouTube, Sachs argues that Washington mistook American dominance, born from two world wars, protected shores and an influx of scientific talent, for a permanent and natural order. That delusion, he says, led the U.S. to assume it could maintain primacy over Eurasia, home to 70% of humanity, despite America accounting for just 4.2%.
