🇨🇦 Canada announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on about 700 American products Tuesday, set to take effect September 8, following the collapse of trade talks and new U.S. tariffs.

The measures, covering roughly $20 billion in annual U.S. imports to match the value of Canadian exports hit by American tariffs, include a doubling of tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum to 50%, and levies on appliances like dishwashers and stoves. Canada also announced it would maintain its 25% tariffs on American-made cars.

Mélanie Joly, Canada’s industry minister, said that some of the items on the tariff list were chosen to target states that voted for Trump.
