The word ‘socialism’ might not be what comes to mind when you think of Florida, but that’s not stopping progressive candidates getting out and knocking on doors before this year’s midterm primaries. But can they persuade voters on their doorsteps?

Oliver Larkin, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialists of America candidate, is running for Congress in a newly drawn district in Florida. On Tuesday, voters will decide between him and Jared Moskowitz, a two-term congressman who calls himself a ‘DeSantis Democrat’.

Guardian reporter Fabiola Cineas followed Larkin, DSA members and volunteers on a Saturday in July as they knocked on doors and spoke to Florida residents on why they should vote for him. Surprisingly, many wanted to chat with the strangers at their door.
